The Explosion Rockets is een van de langst actieve rock-’n-rollbands van Nederland. De groep ontstond eind jaren vijftig in Vught en groeide uit tot een vaste waarde in de Europese rockabilly- en rock-’n-rollscene. Door de decennia heen wisselden namen, bezettingen en muzikale fases elkaar af, maar één missie bleef altijd overeind: de muziek van Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Cliff Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry en andere pioniers uit de jaren vijftig en vroege jaren zestig levend houden.
De beginjaren: van The Jet Black Robbers naar The Hurricane Rollers
De oorsprong gaat terug naar 1959, toen in Vught een groep jonge muzikanten ontstond onder de naam The Jet Black Robbers. Ze deden mee aan talentenjachten en bereikten de finale van een talentwedstrijd op Radio Luxembourg — destijds een van de invloedrijkste radiostations van Europa. In de jaren zestig ging de groep verder als The Hurricane Rollers (met toestemming van de oorspronkelijke Hurricane Rollers), onder leiding van gitaarvirtuoos Bart Strik — bijgenaamd de ‘Jazzmaster King’ en van grote invloed op de sound die later kenmerkend werd voor The Explosion Rockets. De band bouwde een stevige reputatie op in het Nederlandse livecircuit.
De geboorte van The Explosion Rockets
Begin jaren zeventig kreeg de band de naam die legendarisch zou worden: The Explosion Rockets. De stijl werd herkenbaar: nauwkeurige uitvoeringen van klassiekers, gecombineerd met humor, show en publieksinteractie. Met zanger Savage Kalman — als Savage Kalman & The Explosion Rockets — kwam landelijke bekendheid, met een optreden tijdens de honderdste uitzending van Felix Meurders’ The Rock ’n Roll Methode en een verschijning in de TROS Top 50.
Uiteenvallen en wederoprichting
Begin jaren tachtig viel de band uiteen door het veranderende muzieklandschap (new wave, disco, moderne pop). In 1985 blies Thom Sens de band nieuw leven in — sindsdien is de groep onafgebroken actief. Vanaf de tweede helft van de jaren tachtig trad de band steeds vaker op in België, Luxemburg, Duitsland en Engeland en bouwde daar een trouwe fanbase op.
Internationale reputatie
The Explosion Rockets werd een vaste naam in het Europese rock-’n-rollcircuit, met optredens in Nederland, België, Duitsland, Luxemburg, Spanje, Engeland en Wales. Kenmerkend: authentieke instrumentatie, close-harmony zang, uitgebreide Elvis- en Cliff Richard-segmenten, humor en dansbaarheid. De band deelde het podium met o.a. Peter Koelewijn, Chris Montez, Jan de Hont (ZZ en de Maskers), The Blue Diamonds en gitarist James Burton, en was support-act tijdens een Europese tour van Jerry Lee Lewis.
Andy Tielman Award en hernieuwde populariteit
In 2014 ontving de band de prestigieuze Andy Tielman Award. In de jaren 2020 groeide de belangstelling opnieuw — mede door de Elvis-biopic van Baz Luhrmann. In 2023 en 2024 was The Explosion Rockets hoofdact op het Elvis Festival in Bad Nauheim, voor duizenden bezoekers.
Discografie en stijl
Gedurende ruim vier decennia bracht de band meerdere lp’s en cd’s uit — grotendeels zorgvuldig uitgevoerde covers, maar ook eigen werk in dezelfde traditie. Muzikaal beïnvloed door Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Cliff Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry en Shakin’ Stevens. Op Spotify worden hun albums maandelijks door duizenden luisteraars beluisterd.
De huidige band
Vandaag geldt The Explosion Rockets als een van de belangrijkste rock-’n-rollacts van Nederland, met frontman Ruud Kuijpers als gezicht van de moderne bezetting. In 2025 viert de band haar 40-jarig jubileum met een groot jubileumconcert en een speciaal album, deels opgenomen in de legendarische Sun Studio in Memphis.

The Explosion Rockets is one of the longest-running rock ’n roll bands in the Netherlands. The group emerged in the late 1950s in Vught and grew into a fixture of the European rockabilly and rock ’n roll scene. Through the decades the names, line-ups and musical phases changed, but one mission always remained: keeping alive the music of Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Cliff Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and other pioneers of the '50s and early '60s.
The early years: from The Jet Black Robbers to The Hurricane Rollers
The origins date back to 1959, when a group of young musicians in Vught formed as The Jet Black Robbers. They entered talent contests and reached the final of a competition on Radio Luxembourg — then one of Europe's most influential radio stations. In the 1960s the group continued as The Hurricane Rollers (with permission from the original Hurricane Rollers), led by guitar virtuoso Bart Strik — nicknamed the ‘Jazzmaster King’ and a major influence on the sound that would later become typical of The Explosion Rockets. The band built a strong reputation on the Dutch live circuit.
The birth of The Explosion Rockets
In the early 1970s the band took on the name that would become legendary: The Explosion Rockets. Their style became recognisable: precise renditions of the classics combined with humour, showmanship and audience interaction. With singer Savage Kalman — as Savage Kalman & The Explosion Rockets — came national fame, with an appearance on the 100th broadcast of Felix Meurders' The Rock ’n Roll Methode and a spot on the TROS Top 50.
Break-up and reunion
In the early 1980s the band split up as the musical landscape shifted (new wave, disco, modern pop). In 1985 Thom Sens breathed new life into the band — and the group has been active ever since. From the late '80s the band increasingly played in Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and England, building a loyal fanbase abroad.
International reputation
The Explosion Rockets became a fixture of the European rock ’n roll circuit, performing in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, Spain, England and Wales. Hallmarks: authentic instrumentation, close-harmony vocals, extensive Elvis and Cliff Richard segments, humour and danceability. The band shared the stage with Peter Koelewijn, Chris Montez, Jan de Hont (ZZ en de Maskers), The Blue Diamonds and guitarist James Burton, and was a support act on a Jerry Lee Lewis European tour.
Andy Tielman Award and renewed popularity
In 2014 the band received the prestigious Andy Tielman Award. In the 2020s interest surged again — partly thanks to Baz Luhrmann's Elvis biopic. In 2023 and 2024 The Explosion Rockets were a main act at the Elvis Festival in Bad Nauheim, playing for thousands of visitors.

The band today
Today The Explosion Rockets rank among the most important rock ’n roll acts in the Netherlands, with frontman Ruud Kuijpers as the face of the modern line-up. In 2025 the band celebrates its 40th anniversary with a big anniversary show and a special album, partly recorded at the legendary Sun Studio in Memphis.
